Just saw a blurb in today’s Statesman about a visit from famed burger purist, Josh Ozersky. Love this quote from him, which fits in quite well with our philosophy here at ABN: “If you see a crazy burger with 45 toppings on a 17-grain bun, run for the hills.”
The Northcross Mall Elevation Burger is now open! We are fans of the Elevation burger–they offer quality cheddar cheese, hormone-free etc etc beef, delicious fresh fries cooked in olive oil, and tons of free topping choices (including grilled onions…free!). Check it out.
another new place opened a couple weeks ago – big daddy’s or something – at 183 and Burnet in that large strip mall. quality burgers, unique ingredients, pretty good brioche style buns. Owned by the same person who owns Nutty Brown Cafe, fwiw
Great, thanks for the tip. Will check into it and post results here…
This is exciting news. I have eaten a different burger almost every week for over seven years, and the Nutty Brown Cafe burger remains one of my favorites.
Popped into Freddy’s Steakburgers for lunch as I was up in the area perusing the Cedar Park Half Price Books store. Was disappointed with my visit to Freddy’s. Previous visits have been fairly reliable–decent fast food burger, decent fries. Nothing special, but not bad. Today was different. The burger was about the same, but the fries were terrible. They were doused in seasoning salt, which is criminal. There are very few valid uses for seasoning salt, and french fries are not one of those valid uses. The Freddy’s fries are so thin that they became salt sticks. Horribly salty, with that paprika-ey seasoning salt taste. Just awful. Could not finish them, which is saying a lot.
I feel so strongly about this issue that I created a Facebook Cause to address it. Please consider lending your support to this important cause.
I think I’m done with Freddy’s after this last visit.

An article in today’s Statesman details expansion plans for Hat Creek Burgers. Upshot: 5-10 more locations planned, with a “flagship” location in Westlake where those pink flamingos currently reside. UT-area location due to open first, early next year. Thumbs up from ABN…we love Hat Creek!
Most interesting comment on the story: “At least there won’t be many smelly hippies there.”
Looks like Dallas-based Mooyah is going to try the Austin market…again, according to this Austin Business Journal article. They had a location at 183 & Burnet that did not last too long and closed maybe a year ago. The one time I tried it did not entice me to return. Seems like a 5 Guys clone more or less.
Disturbing note from the article:
their hamburger patties are made from 100 percent fresh lean American beef
Hmmm, lean beef is not a good sign!
Top Notch is now serving tater tots! Fried okra is another one of their new sides.
TMZ is on the case with Jesse James, claiming that his Cisco Burger is “kicking ass” and he’s going to open one of them in “his new hometown” of Austin…full story
Some important changes are afoot at Top Notch. They are now open Sundays! They now accept credit cards! And they have a new website (although it took forever to load for me…details)! Good stuff. “Like” them on Facebook while you are at it.
