“Burger Revolution” on at Central Market

CM is promoting a July 4th tie-in Burger Revolution.  Basically they are building zany “burger” creations, like “cranberry Gorgonzola turkey burgers and Thai shrimp patties”.  Umm, we’ll pass on that.  We don’t call those things “burgers” around here.  They also have an accompanying Burger Manifesto which describes their motivations, and which runs counter to our own Official Burger Statement here at ABN.  I’m sure their plain burger is quite delicious (it’s on our list to try out), but we’ll skip the Revolution Burgers….

Off topic, but I have been searching for the 2js special sauce for years. Would you have any resources to locate it?

      Hi Tim,
Just saw this message. I have the ingredients they used, but not the actual measurements of the ingredients. I’d be happy to share that with you. :)

Top Notch & In the Buns Groupons!

Today’s Groupon is $4 for $8 at Top Notch.  No brainer.  But what’s with that photo–that ain’t no burger you can get at Top Notch!  There’s also one for $5 for $10 at In the Buns, also with a fake burger photo.  It’s National Burger Week.

The Top Notch burger, much like the Hill-Bert’s burger, is one of those burgers that tastes a lot better than it looks. Come to think of it, there is usually an inverse relationship between appearance and quality when it comes to dive burgers. I think the Casino El Camino burger is one of the few great dive burgers whose appearance directly indicates the quality of its taste.

In the Buns Deal and Fry News

In the Buns is featured in todays “aDealio”, which is yet another Groupon-esque site that I had never heard of. $7 for $15 worth of grub. And, prominently touted in the dealio is the fact that In the Buns is “testing their new fresh-cut fries“, which is encouraging news! Get the aDealio deal here.

    In the Buns Burger Joint

Read on Chowhound about a new burger place just minutes from my office so had to give it a try.  Overall I was quite impressed with the burger.  It was very juicy and was a good size–6oz–no thin patty here.  Cooked on a griddle, nice crust development.  The cheeseburger has the cheese mixed into the meat instead of sitting on top…not sure about this technique, but at least they offer cheddar and other real cheese (non American) options.  The bun was good–well toasted, held up to the burger but was not overly bready, and was also top-toasted on the griddle, always a nice touch.

They offer an array of quality sugar-cane soda options at the fountain–Maine Root sodas, and Dublin Dr. Pepper on tap.

On the flip side, I thought the fries were pretty much terrible.  They were edible, but were run of the mill frozen curly fries.  Also not a fan of the interior and the tiny tables with the annoying flower sculptures.  The combo price, at $9+ after tax, is a bit steep as well.

Overall, very good burger.  If they switched to fresh fries made in-house, I’d find it difficult to stay away.

Check them out on Facebook (they don’t appear to have a dedicated website). Their Yelp entry has quite a few photos.

    Dan’s Hamburgers–Good

Went to Dan’s recently, an Austin institution.  It’s a reliable favorite.  Griddle patty, frozen faux fresh fries.  Very good onion rings.  Nicely toasted buttery bun–they do the Standard White Bun very well.  Cheddar available.  Overall, a solid griddled thin-patty burger.

This is exciting news. I have eaten a different burger almost every week for over seven years, and the Nutty Brown Cafe burger remains one of my favorites.

    Seasoning Salt Alert

Popped into Freddy’s Steakburgers for lunch as I was up in the area perusing the Cedar Park Half Price Books store.  Was disappointed with my visit to Freddy’s.  Previous visits have been fairly reliable–decent fast food burger, decent fries.  Nothing special, but not bad.  Today was different.  The burger was about the same, but the fries were terrible.  They were doused in seasoning salt, which is criminal.  There are very few valid uses for seasoning salt, and french fries are not one of those valid uses.  The Freddy’s fries are so thin that they became salt sticks.  Horribly salty, with that paprika-ey seasoning salt taste.  Just awful.  Could not finish them, which is saying a lot.

I feel so strongly about this issue that I created a Facebook Cause to address it.  Please consider lending your support to this important cause.

I think I’m done with Freddy’s after this last visit.

    Hat Creek Expansion Plans

An article in today’s Statesman details expansion plans for Hat Creek Burgers.  Upshot: 5-10 more locations planned, with a “flagship” location in Westlake where those pink flamingos currently reside.  UT-area location due to open first, early next year.  Thumbs up from ABN…we love Hat Creek!

Most interesting comment on the story: “At least there won’t be many smelly hippies there.

Why we like Hat Creek (yes, that's real cheddar, folks)!
